Shaft-driven Vs Chain driven motorbikes

Hello there, I'm about to buy a Honda shadow 750cc motor bike. I need to know if it is a problem to get an old school classic one (1998) in good condition, as it fits my size and taste of bikes, given the fact that it's chain-driven. I know it needs more maintenance if compared to the shaft-driven 2008 bike, but I need to know to which extent? in terms of time, money, and performance. Thanks in advance.
